DIRECTOR OF FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Instruction

LOCATION: Districtwide 

UNION AFFILIATION: Association of Baldwin Administrators

START DATE: August 1, 2026 (Anticipated)

WORK YEAR: 11 Months

SALARY: $167,323 (Commensurate with experience and in accordance with the ABA contract) (Prorate for start date)

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Fine and Performing Arts provides leadership, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of the District’s K-12 Fine and Performing Arts programs. The Director oversees curriculum development, instructional practices, program implementation, staff supervision, budgeting, and student performance to ensure alignment with New York State standards, District goals, and best instructional practices. The Director collaborates with administrators, teachers, parents, community organizations, and external agencies to promote high-quality arts education and student achievement while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, Board policies, and contractual agreements.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provide leadership and administrative oversight for Fine and Performing Arts programs and related departments.
  • Collaborate with principals, assistant principals, supervisors, and instructional staff to ensure equitable and consistent implementation of instructional programs across all schools.
  • Lead the development, implementation, evaluation, and articulation of Fine and Performing Arts curriculum and instructional practices aligned with New York State learning standards and District goals.
  • Advise the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents regarding Fine and Performing Arts programs, curriculum, staffing, and instructional initiatives.
  • Develop annual departmental and administrative goals aligned with District priorities.
  • Conduct department meetings and participate in District administrative meetings, committees, and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Analyze student achievement and program performance data to guide curriculum improvements and instructional decision-making.
  • Ensure instructional programs address the diverse needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
  • Oversee and support curricular and co-curricular Fine and Performing Arts programs, including performances, exhibitions, festivals, competitions, parades, public events, and NYSSMA participation.
  • Supervise, observe, mentor, and evaluate assigned staff in collaboration with building and central administrators.
  • Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, tenure recommendation, and support of instructional staff.
  • Ensure personnel evaluations are completed fairly, consistently, and in compliance with legal and contractual requirements.
  • Coordinate professional learning, staff induction, and mentorship opportunities for teachers, student teachers, and interns.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets and oversee expenditures for Fine and Performing Arts programs.
  • Recommend budget priorities and coordinate the purchasing, distribution, and inventory of instructional materials, supplies, instruments, equipment, and technology.
  • Maintain oversight of school-owned instruments and equipment, including repairs, inventory records, maintenance fees, and loan agreements.
  • Ensure instructional spaces and facilities are safe, organized, functional, and supportive of effective teaching and learning.
  • Represent the District and foster positive community partnerships through Board of Education presentations, performances, exhibitions, professional organizations, conferences, and public events.
  • Maintain effective communication with students, staff, families, community agencies, and external organizations.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, grant applications, and correspondence in a timely and professional manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, New York State Education Department mandates, District policies, negotiated agreements, and reporting requirements.
  • Continue professional growth through participation in workshops, conferences, and professional organizations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee within the scope of certification and employment.
Job Qualifications
  • Valid New York State School District Leader (SDL) or School District Administrator (SDA) certification required
  • Valid New York State certification in Music or Art required
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, supervisory, and communication skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience required
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful administrator experience, preferred
  • Ability to effectively evaluate and support instructional staff
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, instructional best practices, and student assessment
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Demonstrate an ability to read, write, and communicate clearly and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to convey information accurately, listen actively, and maintain professional and collaborative relationships
